Depending on the size of the tattoo being removed, treatment times vary. They are typically quite short – on average 5 – 10 minutes.
We recommend patients wait between 8 weeks between sessions to allow the skin to heal and the body to clear the ink particles. With our PicoWay laser, patients typically require between 2-6 sessions to achieve complete removal. Overall health, tattoo size and ink color will determine how fast a tattoo will be completely removed.
Is Tattoo Removal Painful?
Most patients report minimal discomfort during treatments. Prior to treatment we either apply a topical numbing cream or inject lidocaine directly into the area to be treated. In addition, we use the Zimmer Cryogen Chiller to blow cold air on the treatment area. This chills and soothes the epidermis during treatment.
Aftercare
The aftercare for tattoo removal is similar to the care instructions after receiving a tattoo or other laser treatments. We will apply an ointment to the treated skin followed by a sterile wound dressing. Patients are instructed to keep the area moist with ointment, covered and out of the sun. The area should be left undisturbed. A shower or bath is acceptable the day after treatment.
The area may be itchy and slightly irritated but should not be scratched. Additional post-treatment symptoms include whitening of the skin, slight swelling, and a heat sensation similar to that of a sunburn. Flaking or peeling can be seen a few days after treatment.
